One of the most common questions that exercisers ask is: “How long should I exercise?” Whether you want to lose weight, combat anxiety and depression, improve memory, build endurance, or strengthen bones and muscles, exercise can help. People exercise for many reasons, like for work, for health, for recreation, for competition, or for their appearance.
The amount of exercise you need depends on the following:
- Your reasons for exercising
- What is your starting point?
- How quickly you want to achieve your goals?
The type of exercise you choose depends on your personal abilities and preferences, on your schedule, and on the facilities at your disposal.
How long you exercise every day should depend on your goal for that specific workout!
If you are healthy enough for hard intense exercise, your workout program should include hard, high-intensity days, easy days to recover, and moderate days when you build endurance, improve heart health, and burn fat. Each of these workout goals requires a different exercise duration. An example of how long the duration should be on these specific days are as follow:
- Short Hard Workout Days, 20-30 minutes
- Easier Recovery Days, 30-45 minutes
- Long Moderate Workout Days, 45-90 minutes
There is no such thing as an ideal amount of time that everyone’s workout should take. There are too many factors at play that can change things significantly. Factors include from the workout split being used, to each person’s individual experience level, training needs and their goals.
It is recommended to exercise 30 min a day for at least 5 times per week to add to your overall well-being. Keeping up a regular exercise routine is most effective for improved mental health, no matter what type of workout you do. You can get big benefits without having to do a lot. Exercising just five minutes per day could add years to your life.
